Probiotics for Gut

Firstly, let’s start with an important question, what are probiotics? The word ‘bacteria’ brings a negative connotation in many people’s minds when mentioned, however, contrary to that belief, there are actually good and bad bacteria. Probiotics are bacteria and yeast that are good for the body, especially the digestive system. These good bacteria also can be typically found in fermented foods such as kimchi, yogurt and miso, which has been scientifically proven to improve gut health. One common ingredient found in probiotics is Lactobacillus Paracasei, which can be commonly found in dairy product fermentation and is effective at breaking down proteins into amino acids. It has many benefits to it, one of which is being an immune system booster for the body by increasing the production of cytokines, which are secreted by cells of the immune system. Other than boosting the immune system of our body, cytokines also have anti-inflammatory properties, which strengthens and aids the body in the defense against diseases. 

So, why is it important to balance our gut? Studies have shown that nearly 1 in 10 Singaporeans suffers from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which can be caused by the presence of unfriendly bacteria in the gut. By taking probiotics for the gut, it promotes the balance of good and bad bacteria in our gut which leads to a stronger immune system to fight off diseases. An equilibrium of good and bad bacteria in the gut leads to the good bacteria keeping the bad ones in check and ensures that they do not have the space to grow.

Probiotics for Gut (helps with digestion)

As mentioned in the previous blog post, probiotics provides various health benefits, one of which is that it aids with digestion. Fermented foods like kimchi aids with digestion by breaking down the nutrients in the food and making them easier to digest. A specific type of good bacteria known as Lactobacillus Paracasei is a species of lactic acid bacteria that is commonly found in fermented foods. This bacteria helps to strengthen the intestinal barrier of the body while also improving absorption of nutrients. Many Singaporeans often eat out or eat outside food due to their hectic lifestyles which results in them not being able to cook at home and therefore will turn to foods that may not be unhealthy for the body and may cause an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in our body. This makes it hard for the body to get proper nutrients and therefore may give rise to digestive issues in Singapore. Taking probiotics supplements may then help in these situations because studies have shown that probiotics are capable of improving digestion by breaking down the nutrients in the food so that it can be better absorbed by our body and at the same time, aiding digestive issues in Singapore.

For usage of probiotics, it is recommended to take the supplements in small amounts and observe the effects it has on your body, before deciding whether to increase intake of it. Before taking probiotics supplements, you can also consult a doctor on whether it is suitable to consume them.
